Boarding and Blanketing Your Horse
Jan 10, 2025
Yes there is a controversy about blanketing horses. We are all adults and know where we stand on that topic.
However, let’s discuss etiquette about blanketing while boarding your equine.

If the blanketing is the responsibility of the owner, then have a back up plan for when the facility owner has to step in for the health of the equine. For example, if the temperatures rise and the blanket has not been removed by the owner and that facility owner has to step in when then there needs to be a policy in place before the situation happens.
I hear of horror stories of facility owners having to deal with boarders that started off great and then turned into nightmares about expecting facility managers or owners to drop everything and go blanket and unblanket horses.
The facility manager or owner gets stuck in a hard position because they care about the horse and the owner but then resentment starts to build because of a lack of respect for their time due to the blanketing issue.
Use this post as a conversation starter to make sure you are not the dreaded diva or if you are the facility manager/owner that isn’t meeting boarders expectations about blanketing.
Time is money. If time is sacrificed for something for you, there should be monetary or an alternative compensation. Discuss it upfront to avoid feelings and relationship issues.
We all love our horses. We just have to work out the kinks so everyone feels respected and valued.
